Detailed Description

The tree reaches a maximum height of 8 m and a diameter of about 60 cm. The shaft is short and mostly chip-backed. The bark of older trees is grey-brown, peeling off in thin scales.

Occurrence

The apple tree has its original home in the West Indies. Today it is spread all over Europe, except Northern Europe and West Asia.

Characteristic and wood color

Sapwood and heartwood only slightly different. The sapwood is reddish brown, while the heartwood is reddish to reddish brown. The wood often has pith flecks and is hardly shiny. Annual rings and growth zones are only indistinct, pores and medullary rays are not visible to the naked eye. The wood is usually twisted and stubborn.
