Detailed Description

A very large tree that reaches heights of up to 90 m and a diameter of up to 450 cm, and in favourable locations even up to 110 m high and 600 cm in diameter. The trunks are knotless up to 30 m. The bark is very thick, reddish and deeply fissured.

Occurrence

The redwood tree grows in North America on the west coast of the USA.

Characteristic and wood color

The sapwood and heartwood are easy to distinguish. The sapwood is narrow and yellow-white, while the heartwood is light red to brownish red, later darkening in air. The wood is almost resinless. It is short-fibred and not hard, mostly straight grained and light.
