Detailed Description

Bamboo does not form wood in the usual sense. The vascular bundles are not arranged in a circle, but irregularly distributed on the trunk cross-section. A continuous growth of thickness with wood formation is therefore not possible here, so that tree forms are also rare. The species actually belongs to the grasses and shall be listed here mainly because of its great economic importance. Bamboo grows sociable, dense and bushy. It forms trunks up to a height of 40 m with diameters of up to 15 cm and more. The internodes are 30 to 45 cm long and have wall thicknesses of 3 to 5 cm.

Bamboo is widely cultivated in East Asia, especially in the plains and low hill countries of East India, along the foothills and in the valleys of Burma, as well as in China and Northern India.

Characteristic and wood color

Bamboo is one of the most useful plants and replaces the missing wood in East Asia. It is far from possible to list the multitude of uses in its growing areas. The thicker trunks are used to build houses and bridges, to make furniture and vessels, as posts and beams. The weaker trunks are split and used for filling walls, flooring, roofing, water pipes, etc.
