Characteristic and wood color

The sapwood and the heartwood are strongly separated. The sapwood is up to 3 cm thick, almost white, while the heartwood is golden brown to dark brown with black, partly yellowish or reddish brown veins. The wood is very decorative. When cut into quarters it is uniform in colour and almost black. The structure is coarse and straight grained, twisted growth is common. The wood is very heavy, little shrinking, very resistant to pressure and tension.
