Characteristic and wood color

Sapwood and heartwood are not sharply separated. The sapwood is yellow to yellowish brown, while the heartwood varies from yellowish to olive or chocolate brown in the fresh state, but quickly darkens to walnut, more or less lighter and darker striped or decoratively drawn. The wood has a strong walnut character. When freshly cut, the wood has a pungent, somewhat unpleasant odour which is lost later. The structure is variable and varies from straight grained to recumbent, the texture is fine and even.
