Detailed Description

Weymouth pine thrives best in fertile, moist soils, but also on dry sandy soils. In favourable locations it can reach an age of up to 300 years, heights of up to 45 m and diameters of up to 150 cm and more. On average, it grows up to 50 m high with a diameter of about 100 cm. In closed stands, the stem is knot-free up to 20 m, whereas in free growth, branches are already formed very low, which do not fall off due to the high resin content and therefore form ingrown branches and knots.

Occurrence

The Weymouth pine has its origin in North America, especially in the areas of the Great Lakes and up to high up in Newfoundland. Meanwhile the Weymouth pine is also widespread throughout Europe.

Characteristic and wood color

Sapwood and heartwood are sharply separated. The sapwood is pale yellowish-white, while the heartwood is yellowish-red to light brown and later darkens. The wood is very soft, not hard, straight-growing, fine-grained, light, shrinks little and does not throw itself when drying.
