Characteristic and wood color

Sapwood and heartwood are separated. The sapwood is narrow, yellowish to greyish white, sometimes with a reddish tinge. The heartwood varies in colour from golden brown to dark purple brown with darker, sometimes black veins almost regularly. The darker stripes delimit the growth zones and give the wood a typical, attractive effect, which is especially noticeable when cut flat.
