Properties

Raw density: 650 - 730 Kg/m3

Occurrence

Throughout Europe up to 60 degrees northern latitude, especially in Greece and Portugal, formerly also in large stands in Switzerland and Germany, where the tree is now protected; also in North Africa, Asia Minor, Iran, in South Asia, Japan and India, and in North America.

Characteristic and wood color

Sapwood and heartwood are well separated. The sapwood is narrow and yellowish-white, while the heartwood is brownish, reddish brown, orange brown, sometimes mahogany or purplish. Older trees produce a very beautiful grained wood of orange-yellow colour with brown-red veins of different shades. The annual rings are very narrow and, depending on the growing area, both fine and coarse-waved, protruding through wide and deep dark late wood zones. The wood is therefore very decorative. Yew is one of the densest and heaviest woods in Europe and is similar in hardness to ash.
