Sapwood and heartwood clearly separated. The sapwood is narrow to medium broad, grey to reddish. The heartwood has considerable colour variations between fresh green and olive brown, later brown to black darkening. Lighter and darker zones give the wood a stripy appearance. It usually has an oily appearance. The pores are fine, scattered and filled with sulphur yellow fillings. The wood is very hard, very heavy, firm, durable, weatherproof and has good stability.
