Detailed Description

A stately, evergreen tree that reaches heights of up to 25 m and diameters of up to 60 cm in favourable locations. It is very slow growing. The shaft is developed very differently depending on the location and can be straight and knotless, curved and sloping or shrubby and low-growing. The bark is thin, reddish-brown, peeling off in smooth plates - similar to the plane tree.

Characteristic and wood color

Sapwood and heartwood are not very different. The sapwood is consistently lighter than the heartwood and narrow. The wood is reddish brown. The annual rings vary in width and are usually wavy, which makes the wood look decorative. The structure is mostly straight grained, but depending on the origin, twist growth can also occur. The texture is very dense and fine. Madrona is very well suited for slicing, with root tubers being particularly sought after for decorative veneers.
