Detailed Description

A small and weak tree that rarely grows to heights over 10 m and diameters over 50 cm. The shaft is poorly formed, so that the useful length for knotless pieces is usually 2 m, rarely up to 3 m.

Tradenames and other names

Bot. Name: Dalbergia variabilis

Tradename De: Bahia, Rosenholz

Tradename En: Bahia Rosewood, Pinkwood

Properties

Raw density: 870 - 980 Kg/m3

Occurrence

The Bahia rosewood grows only in Brazil and is therefore considered very valuable.

Characteristic and wood color

Sapwood and heartwood are sharply separated, the sapwood being whitish to light grey. Depending on the age of the trunks, the width of the sapwood is very different. The heartwood is yellowish, usually with a reddish shimmer, and irregularly, regardless of the growth zones, darker striped, usually yellow or red or purple. The wood is therefore very decorative.
