Detailed Description

Depending on the origin, the dimensions are also very different. In favourable locations the trees reach heights of up to about 50 m and diameters of up to 120 cm, but generally only up to 35 m and a diameter of about 80 cm. The shaft has grown very straight and slender and is about 15 m knotless.

Occurrence

The different species grow in a large distribution area from Brazil north to Mexico. Depending on their origin, the dimensions are also very different.

Characteristic and wood color

The bark is dark grey and shiny. Sapwood and heartwood are sharply separated. The sapwood is whitish, usually reddish striped, while the heartwood is grey-brown to red-violet when freshly cut, but darkens to purple when exposed to light and air. The different species also show differences in colour. The structure is straight grained throughout, twisted growth and stubbornness occur, while the texture is very fine and even.
