Characteristic and wood color

The sapwood and core are hardly distinguishable. The wood is uniformly coloured whitish to yellowish-brown. When freshly cut, the wood has a pungent, unpleasant odor which disappears with drying. The structure of Sen is very similar in colour to white ash or very light elm, which is why the wood is often incorrectly called Japanese elm or Sen ash in Germany. However, Sen has nothing in common with both types of wood and belongs to a completely different family. The medullary rays appear as fine mirrors, making the wood look decorative.
