Detailed Description

As it is a very light wood species, the dimensions depend very much on the location. Under favourable conditions, the tree can reach a height of up to 30 m and a diameter of up to about 120 cm. Well-grown trees are knot-free up to 15 m. The bark is light grey, thin and smooth.

Characteristic and wood color

Sapwood and heartwood are well distinguishable. The sapwood is narrow and colourless or whiteish. The heartwood varies in colour from light yellowish brown to a medium brown, usually with a reddish shimmer, and later darkening. Like the European oak, the structure of this species is very dependent on the growth conditions. The woods grown in the north are consistently fine-grained and mild, particularly suitable for veneers and interior finishing, while those of more southern provenance are faster growing, coarser and with broad annual rings, particularly suitable for construction purposes.
