Detailed Description

A large tree with heights of up to 45 m and a diameter of over 200 cm at favourable locations. The growth depends mainly on the location. Individually growing trunks develop quickly and have a short shaft with a broad umbrella-like crown. The shaft is generally knotless at 10 - 15 m, has no significant root touches and an average diameter of around 100 cm. The bark is about 8 mm thick, outside grey to orange, inside light brown with reddish brown spots and very fibrous.

Merbau grows in the tropical climate of Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Seschelles and also Madagascar.

Characteristic and wood color

Sapwood and heartwood are well separated. The sapwood is up to 1 cm wide and whitish to pale yellow, while the heartwood is brown to dark reddish brown with light stripes, which give the wood a very decorative effect.
