Tradename De: Iroko, Kambala

Tradename En: Iroko

Properties

Raw density: 600 - 800 Kg/m3

Occurrence

Iroko grows in the area from West to East Africa with larger populations in Cameroon and the Ivory Coast. It is often associated with abachi and mahogany species, today often grown on cleared areas.

Characteristic and wood color

The sapwood is grey and narrow, wider in the female tree and easily distinguishable from the heartwood. The heartwood is light brown, similar to oak and teak. When freshly cut, the heartwood is light grey to yellow, but darkens quickly in the air. The male wood is darker than the female trunk. Matt shiny. The pores are rough and clearly visible. The annual rings are clearly visible and marked by darker zones. The wood is long and fine fibrous, slightly wavy, firm, fat, tough, moderately dense and hard.
