Detailed Description

Tree of first size up to 40 m high and knotless on 25-30 m with diameters up to 200 cm. The tree contains strongly scented resin. Bark smooth, not flaking, up to 8 mm thick, light grey, later reddish grey, cut surface reddish.

Occurrence

Okume grows mainly in western Africa, mainly in Cameroon, Guinea and Gabon.

Characteristic and wood color

The wood is light to medium hard, sapwood is narrow and grey. The pores are medium to coarse, scattered, often single and without contents. The grain is slightly twisted. In colour it is white to light pink or light red, similar to mahogany, and has a slight silky lustre.
