Detailed Description

A large tree up to 40 m and up to 150 cm in diameter, with a slender, straight shaft that is knotless up to 20 m. This results in timber of up to 12 fm per trunk.

Occurrence

The Padouk tree is found throughout Africa, widely distributed in Nigeria, Cameroon, Guinea, Gabon, Congo and Angola.

Characteristic and wood color

Sapwood and heartwood are sharply separated. The sapwood is white to cream coloured, up to about 20 cm wide. The heartwood is bright red when freshly cut, later darkening to orange reddish brown and later to a dull brown. The wood is of rather coarse structure with regular, broad, stripes, recalcitrant.
