Project description:
The Fäh House was originally built in 1969 and extensively renovated between 2021 and 2024. The design approach is clearly based on mid-century modern architecture, but reinterprets it in a contemporary and high-quality way. The spacious, room-defining wooden surfaces made of Jatoba on the ceilings, walls and fixtures are characteristic, giving the house a warm, elegant yet powerful atmosphere.
In deliberate contrast to the warm wood tones are the broken black slate tiles on the floor and the deliberate use of colour accents in the interior. The central fireplace area forms an architectural centrepiece and underlines the homely character of the house. Customised furniture, integrated shelving and seating niches demonstrate the precision craftsmanship and high quality of the workmanship.
Instead of the frequently chosen wood types oak or walnut, the client boldly opted for jatoba. The heartwood of this tree, which is native to Central and South America, ranges in colour from warm brown to reddish nuances and light violet-brown tones. The elegant and timeless appearance is an ideal match for the clear architecture and design aspirations of the project.
A central theme was the sustainability of the material used. Although Jatoba is a tropical wood, only FSC-certified wood from Roser AG was used. FSC certification guarantees responsible forest management as well as fair social and ecological standards. This project is an example of how tropical wood can be a sustainable and responsible choice if its origin is transparent and its certification is verified.

No. Tropical wood is not fundamentally harmful to the environment. The decisive factor is the origin. Wood from illegal logging or uncontrolled deforestation is problematic. Tropical timber from certified, responsibly managed forestry, on the other hand, can be a sustainable choice. Certifications such as FSC guarantee controlled utilisation, reforestation and protection of ecosystems.
FSC stands for responsible forest management with clear ecological and social standards. These include
- controlled timber harvesting
- protection of biodiversity
- long-term forest management
- fair working conditions
- transparent supply chains
When you buy FSC-certified tropical veneer, you can be sure that the material comes from verified sources.
Sustainability does not depend on the continent, but on the management. European forests can also be poorly managed, while tropical forests can be managed in an exemplary sustainable manner. Certification, proof of origin and responsible processing are crucial.
Many tropical woods have special technical and design properties:
- high durability
- Great hardness and stability
- exceptional colouring
- striking grain
- long service life
Thanks to these properties, tropical wood can make very durable products. A long service life is a key factor in sustainable construction.
Yes, in many cases even more so. Veneer utilises the wood extremely efficiently:
- one log provides very large surfaces
- Significantly lower material consumption
- Maximum utilisation of resources
- high-quality appearance with minimal use of wood
Veneer is therefore one of the most resource-efficient wood products.
Yes - as long as attention is paid to certified origin, transparent supply chains and reputable suppliers. Responsibly sourced tropical timber supports sustainable forestry, creates local jobs and promotes the long-term conservation of forest areas.
Roser AG attaches great importance to traceable origin, tested quality and personalised advice. Customers can select veneers in the konzept.raum and receive comprehensive advice on properties, origin and possible applications. This provides a reliable basis for making decisions on sustainable wood solutions.
